By November 1st, Schooner Bay Market Place will be completely GREEN! We have replaced our plastic and styro-foam packaging products with products which are degradable in our landfill. We have also replaced our old plastic shopping bags with plastic bags which are degradable. Because we live on a island where recycling is not possible, it is even more important for us on St. Croix and other islands to do the right thing and use degradable product now. Our businesses need to go green now to save our islands. These products are not easy to get to the caribbean, but they are available. New technology has made it possible to modify plastics so they are degradable. Take a look at epi-global.com. They have developed a substance to add to plastic containers that will make them degradable. It is called TDPA (totally degradable plastic additives). It simply changes the molecular structure of plastics to make them degrade in landfills. We use containers made by EPI-Global in our Salad Bar, for our Grab n' Go Salads and for our prepared foods. They look like they are made of plastic, but they are totally degradable. They are a one piece, clear plastic container with a hinged lid. They are good looking, and easy to use with lids that snap securely. They are suitable for cold foods only, Hot Foods make them start to break down. The containers we have chosen to replace our styro-foam hot food containers are produced by a company called Earth's Choice. They have developed a way to incorporate rapidly replenishable and environmentally safe resources to produce packaging products. Some of the renewable resources they are in their products are bamboo, soy, corn, and palm. These containers are the shape of traditional styro-foam containers but made from rapidly renewable and degradable products. They are heat resistant and microwave safe. We are also using Flatware (knives, forks, and spoons) from this company which are made from corn. We have replaced our styro-foam cups with paper cups. And we have replaced our plastic soup containers with paper soup containers. And we have replaced napkins we have used for over 10 years with recycled napkins by Tork. (torkusa.com). At Schooner Bay Market Place, it is our hope that by bringing these products to the Caribbean, and setting the example that iti is possible, other businesses will also go green.
